What we look at is not always what we see.
Photography begins with what lies before our eyes, but finds its meaning in what remains after the gaze.
André Nunez’s work investigates territories, cities, structures and everyday events. The images observe the ways in which space is organized, transformed and lived, searching for relationships that do not always reveal themselves at once.
Each series is born from a time of staying. Not from a quick passage through a place, but from the insistence on returning, observing and waiting, until the ordinary scene reveals another layer, usually invisible to those who merely pass by.
In Belém, this time of staying took place on the edges of Ver-o-Peso, one of the largest open-air markets in Latin America, where the river, commerce and daily life have intertwined for centuries. The series grew out of an attempt to understand that territory not as a setting, but as an organism.
Some works belong to projects developed over many years. Others arise from encounters and isolated moments that later find their place within a larger body of work.
At other times, the investigation moves in the opposite direction: not waiting, but vertigo. New York, photographed in long exposures and multiple layers, ceased to be a city and became a sensation: light, displacement, overlapping memory.
New York does not allow the photographer to remain a mere observer. There, he becomes a body traversed by a city that never stops.
Photography is understood here not merely as a record, but as a form of inquiry. This inquiry also crosses borders: in Shanghai, at the beginning of one of the greatest urban transformations of the century, the camera documented the moment of inflection between what the city was and what it was about to become.
At other moments, the gaze draws closer until the landscape dissolves into matter: texture, decay, time deposited on the surface of things. The Amazon, seen up close, ceases to be a panorama and becomes skin.
There are also the territories of passage: ports, routes, cargo crossing the sea without ever revealing what it carries. Reflux observes this silent flow: the economy as landscape, commerce as horizon.
These are different territories, scales and times. Yet they all start from the same question: what remains of a place once it is no longer merely seen?
